Homeland continued to pile up the conflict in Sunday night’s episode “Geronation,” which featured multiple interrogation scenes that renders Saul’s (Mandy Patinkin) true character questionable once again.
Quinn (Rupert Friend) hasn’t been participating in Saul’s master plan to take down Javadi (Shaun Toub) for very long, but already he’s suffering the consequences. While he’s taking a shower, Dar Adal (F. Murray Abraham) pays him a visit. He wants Quinn to answer for where they’ve been the last week, and more importantly, what happened at the suburban house where two women were found dead. When Quinn feigns ignorance, Dar Adal slips him a photograph that places Quinn at the scene of the crime.
When Quinn tells Carrie (Claire Danes) about Dar Adal’s visit, she’s immediately worried. Saul decides that the best way to deal with it would be for Carrie to talk to the police chief she’s friendly with. He tells her to “play the national security card,” and Carrie dutifully answers the chief’s questions with a series of “That’s classifieds.” During the Q&A, Carrie, likely suffering from a combination of morning sickness and nerves, has to excuse herself to throw up.
Carrie is ultimately successful in getting the chief’s cooperation, although he does say that they probably won’t be able to cover up the CIA’s involvement forever. Quinn gets the news then goes to the house where the murders took place for his own questioning. He struggles to maintain his dignity in pulling the national security card and ultimately crumbles. He takes full blame for the murders he didn’t commit, though feels like he helped to make happen. Quinn thereby saves the agency. He tells Carrie he’s done with the CIA, believing they cause more damage than they prevent, but she has one last mission for him.
Saul, meanwhile, is interrogating Javadi. After the villain demeans Fara (Nazanin Boniadi), Saul reveals his true plan for Javadi – placing him in Iran as an asset. Javadi wants nothing to do with it, and has no desire to go back to Iran. When Saul brings up his murdering of Fariba, Javadi claims it was justice for her being unfaithful to him. Saul tries to play on their shared past, and as a reply he gets to hear of all the atrocities Javadi has committed since then. When Javadi skips the CIA bombing, Saul informs him it was that act that placed him at the head of the CIA. From Javadi, Saul learns that it wasn’t Brody (Damien Lewis), but another one of Abu Nazir’s men who moved the car.
Arriving at CIA HQ for the first time in a week, Saul comes face to face with Dar Adal. Dar Adal informs Saul that he’s not doing himself any favors in the eyes of Sen. Lockhart (Tracy Letts) or anyone else for that matter. Lockhart knows something is going on, and Saul lets him know everything. Unsurprisingly, Lockhart isn’t pleased and tells Saul he’s making him a bigger mess to clean up when he takes over the CIA in less than two weeks time. Saul tells Lockhart Javadi is in the U.S. but will soon be airborne and en route to Iran. When Lockhart threatens to call the president, Saul locks him in a room before sharing congratulatory drinks with Dar Adal, whose allegiance is as ever up in the air.
On the way to the airport, Javadi and Carrie engage in a tense conversation about the CIA bombing. Javadi reveals to Carrie that Brody was not the person who planted to bomb, which visibly relieves her. But, Javadi mentions that there are more questions to be asked – Who gave the bomber the keys to Brody’s car? Who made the bomb? "As far as I know, he's still in the country,” and the person who knows who did it is "the man that brought us together," he reveals. Carrie thinks it’s the lawyer LeLand Bennett, but could it be Saul?
Saul takes his leave from work to return home to Mira (Sarita Choudhury), who had spent her day with Alan Bernard. Instead of trying to talk to his wife about their situation, he goes in for a hug, telling her how beautiful she is. She hugs him back, but her heart isn’t into it. Saul is oblivious to wife’s feelings, perhaps suffering from the overconfidence of having successfully turned Javadi. It remains to be see if his plan truly worked and if he has a hope of saving his marriage.
