The newest viral proposal is an elaborate flash mob featuring Spencer Stout asking boyfriend Dustin Reeser to marry him in a Salt Lake City Home Depot in the lumber aisle.
Friends and family of the couple gathered in the Home Depot, dressed in bright neon colors and dancing along to “Somebody Loves You” by Betty Who. Some family members who weren’t able to attend still joined in, appearing via skype or video chat on performers’ computers.
Spencer doesn’t appear until three minutes into the elaborate song and dance, dressed in a nice suit for the occasion, handing Dustin a sign with lyrics from the song, “If I am good to you… won’t you be good to me?”
When the song ends, Stout takes Reeser’s hand and gets down on bended knee to propose. Both are in tears when Reeser says yes.
Though many elaborate proposals that have popped up on YouTube have later been proven to be false, this Home Depot proposal is the real thing. An employee at the Salt Lake City Home Depot reportedly confirmed that they had cleared the aisle for the flash mob proposal on Sept. 1.
“I start to recognize people, and then I start to recognize more people, and I’m thinking in my head it’s a really nice graduation gift, but a little weird,” Reese told the local Fox News of his initial reaction to the flash mob.
The newly engaged couple says they plan to wed sometime next summer, but have yet to begin any wedding planning. Stout also explained the significance of Home Depot in their relationship, saying that Home Depot is where the two first met.
“The very first time we met, we walked through a Home Depot, and he showed me what he had built and showed me what we had done, so I thought it would be a great place for the proposal because it was kind of our first date,” Stout said.
The video, titled “Spencer’s Home Depot Marriage Proposal” was uploaded to YouTube on Sept. 11, and currently has almost 10 million views.
Betty Who, the 21-year-old Australian singer/songwriter behind "Somebody Loves You," signed a record deal with RCA after the video proposal went viral, though both parties insist that the deal had been in the works long before Who became part of a viral sensation.
The musician says she has not had any direct contact with Sout or Reeser, but admitted she cried when she saw the video proposal for the first time.
"Their video inspired love in millions of people, and that's really all I've ever wanted to do," Who told Billboard.
