Hollywood is currently working on a remake of William Golding’s Lord of the Flies adaptation, except this time with an all-female cast.
Much of the entertainment world as well as Twitter and the public is upset by this, but not for the reasons you might think. As most high school graduates remember from their English class, Lord of the Flies is a novel about the toxicity of masculinity, and how male violence breeds more male violence. The whole plot and point of the novel is based on the fact that boys, not girls, were stranded on an island.
And if that weren’t enough, the film is being written by two men – Scott McGehee and David Siegel. “We want to do a very faithful but contemporized adaptation of the book, but our idea was to do it with all girls rather than boys,” Siegel told Deadline.
No more details of the film have been shared, but people are unhappy with the premise, and most agree that the filmmakers must have missed the entire point of the novel. “An all-women remake of Lord of the Flies makes no sense because… the plot of that book wouldn’t happen with all women.” wrote feminist author Roxane Gay. “What could go wrong here… [flies into frame on a broom] the thing about lord of the flies is that it’s about systemic male violence + how it replicates [flies away],” said New Yorker writer Rachel Syme.
Continuing with that theme, activist Froy says, “uhm lord of the flies is about the replication of systemic masculine toxicity every 9th grader knows this u can read about it on sparknotes.” And writer James Hurley drives the message home in a series of tweets: “imagine having such little interest in seeking out original stories about girlhood by women that you remake LORD OF THE FLIES with girls… imagine misunderstanding ‘lord of the flies’ to this degree. like????????… goal in championing stories about/by women is TO HAVE NEW STORIES, new & different themes, characters, experiences represented in culture… it doesn’t mean replacing stories significantly ABOUT masculinity, about societal expectations 4 young men, male bonding, masculine toxicity… u can’t confront issues like sexism & the patriarchy by ignoring the need for well-told stories exploring the impact these have on men/boys… like. READ THE BOOK.”
