Hillary Clinton TV Projects Canceled By NBC, CNN

Hillary Clinton was to be the focus of two much-anticipated television projects that would air on NBC and CNN respectively. By Tuesday, both networks announced that they were canceling plans to go forward with the Clinton-centric programming.

NBC had planned to produce a four-part miniseries that would star Diane Lane as the former Secretary of State and was slated to be released sometime before the 2016 general election. Hillary was not only suffering from protests from outside groups, but was contending against internal dissent regarding the project as well. Chuck Todd, a correspondent for NBC affiliate MSNBC, was a vocal opponent of the bio-series, believing it could actually injure Clinton’s chance at the presidency, as well as discredit journalists like himself who work for the network.

Documentary filmmaker Charles H. Ferguson was tapped to helm the feature-length CNN documentary. On Monday, Ferguson announced that he quit the project due to difficulty getting people to work with him to pull it together – including Clinton herself who declined to be interviewed – in an article for the Huffington Post. Following the filmmaker’s statements, CNN confirmed that they’d backed out of the endeavor altogether.

When NBC and CNN announced their initial plans for the Hillary Rodham Clinton content and their suspect release dates, there was a general outcry from the Republican National Committee. The RNC protested both projects, claiming they’d seek to block both networks from airing 2016 presidential debates featuring GOP hopefuls. The GOP feared that the projects would glorify Clinton and aid her in a bid for the presidency – if she were to run.

Clinton has yet to confirm or rule out running in the 2016 election. If she were to throw her hat into the ring, she’s generally thought to be the best chance at the Democrats holding onto the White House. Other options, including Vice President Joe Biden and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo would have a tougher time against the front-runners on the right – N.J. Governor Chris Christie, Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Wisconsin Congressman and former Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan.
