A new series based on Curtis Sittenfeld’s alternative history novel, Rodham, that imagines a world where Hillary Rodham never married Bill Clinton, is in its development stage at Hulu. Sarah Treem, the co-creator of The Affair, is pioneering the project for the streaming platform with Sittenfeld working as one of the executive producers.
Rodham was published in May by Random House. It tells a fictionalized story about how the former secretary of state turned down Bill Clinton’s marriage proposal and continued to have a successful career as an independent, single woman.
The book is a New York Times bestseller as it mixes what really happened in the life of Hillary Clinton with what could have happened if she never married Bill.
The official synopsis for the book reads, “In 1971, Hillary Rodham is a young woman full of promise: Life magazine has covered her Wellesley commencement speech, she’s attending Yale Law School, and she’s on the forefront of student activism and the women’s rights movement. And then she meets Bill Clinton.”
Hulu previously released a four-part docuseries in March about Hillary Clinton called, Hillary. The series premiered on the streaming platform after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival. The former secretary of state was involved in the making of the show which featured interviews with her friends, family, colleagues, journalists and the former presidential candidate herself.
Rodham has not yet been formally ordered to series by Hulu, but all the other pieces to make the show are coming together.
