Hilary Duff and former NHL hockey player Mike Comrie have decided to separate after three years of marriage.
Duff and Comrie’s separation was confirmed through the singer and actress’ rep. "They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other's lives,” the rep told Us Weekly. “They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time."
Duff and Comrie’s son Luca is 21-months old.
"There was no major incident -– no big event between the two of them," a source told People. "They really did drift apart. They have put effort and thought into this decision for a long time. They tried couples therapy, but in the end, they realized at this time, they work better as friends. And they really are great friends."
Upon receiving positive reactions from fans and followers on Twitter who’d learned of the couple’s split, Duff, 26, tweeted her thanks for their positivity during her tough personal time.
Duff and Comrie, 33, got engaged in February 2010 in Maui after two years of dating. They were married in August that same year in Santa Barbara, Calif., in front of 100 guests, including Duff’s sister Haylie, who served as her maid of honor.
