Much has been made of the fact that Meghan Markle, the new Duchess of Sussex, is American, biracial and formerly married, all unusual qualities for someone marrying into the British royal family. And what of that “formerly married” part? Just who was Markle’s first husband.

That first husband goes by the name of Trevor Engelson, and he is a producer with a variety of TV and film credits. He has worked on such movies as the 2010 Robert Pattinson weepie Remember Me and the 2016 Aaron Eckhart demonic thriller Incarnate. He is currently an executive producer on the TV series Snowfall and Heathers. He started his career as a production assistant on such films as Deep Blue Sea.

At 41 years old, Engelson is five years older than Markle. They started dating in 2004, got married in Jamaica in 2011, and got divorced in 2013, citing that old standby of “irreconcilable differences.” According to “insiders” cited by Metro, those differences were of the geographical variety, as she busy shooting Suits in Toronto while he was working in Los Angeles.

Engelson recently pitched, but has since backed out of, a potential new series for Fox that sure sounds like it was inspired by his own life. Its premise was described thus: “Divorce is hard. Sharing custody is harder. Sharing custody with the British Royal family when your wife marries a prince, in the unforgiving spotlight of London’s tabloid media, is next level.”

Since divorcing Markle, Engelson dated actress Charlotte McKinney of last year’s Baywatch, and he is now dating dietitian Tracey Kurland.
