Heather Belford, a 30-year-old woman from Montgomery County, Pa., allegedly stole upwards of $10,000 from Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts troops she was working with.
Belford used a card given to her by the scouts to access funds for the Oaks Elementary School troops to clean out the accounts, according to WPVI-TV.
“In the end we found that the Cub Scouts had lost over $3,000 and the Girl Scouts had lost over $7,000,” said Det. Sgt. Ray Bechtel. The official numbers Belford is accused of embezzling are $3,411.28 from Cub Scout Pack 27 and $7,318.88 from Girl Scout Troop 7343 and the Girl Scouts of America of Eastern Pennsylvania.
Upon learning about the missing funds, Scouts and the parents of Scouts have spoken out. “My son said it best that it was very sad to know that they worked very hard for all of this and to have it, in a matter of days, taken away from them,” said Marcie Callahan.
Her son, Dylan Callahan, explained. “We sold lots of popcorn, we sold some spirit cups.”
Belford has been charged with multiple counts of theft and released on $5,000 unsecured bail. She’ll appear in court for a hearing next month.
