The 2014 Slenderman-inspired stabbing is the focus of a new HBO documentary, Beware the Slenderman, which will premiere at the 2016 SXSW festival.
Beware the Slenderman will tell the story of the two 12-year-old girls – Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier – who claimed that they had attempted to kill their friend in order or appease the Creepypasta character Slenderman.
Academy Award-nominated director Irene Taylor Brodsky was able to delve into the details of the stabbing in Waukesha, Wis., with the help of exclusive interviews with both Geyser and Weier’s families, according to IndieWire. Brodsky also explores the broader issues of Internet boogeymen and the effects they – and other manifestations of the digital age – can have on children.
“Shot over 18 months with heartbreaking access to the families of the would-be murderers, the film plunges deep down the rabbit hole of their crime, a Boogeyman and our society’s most impressionable consumers of media,” reads the SXSW press release for the doc. “The entrance to the internet can quickly lead us to its dark basement, within just a matter of clicks. How much do we hold children responsible for what they find there?”
Beware the Slenderman is set to premiere at SXSW on March 11. No premiere date for its launch on HBO has been announced.
