On Tuesday, HBO officially announced that it has given a straight-to-series order for House of the Dragon, an upcoming Thrones prequel series.
An upcoming 10-episode drama, which tells the story of House Targaryen, is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, and takes place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
HBO Max confirmed the news by sharing the tweet posted on the Game of Thrones official account. “#HouseOfTheDragon, a #GameofThrones prequel is coming to @HBO. The series is co-created by @GRRMSpeaking and Ryan Condal. Miguel Sapochnik will partner with Condal as showrunner and will direct the pilot and additional episodes. Condal will be writing the series.”
The prequel series, House of the Dragon, is co-created by Martin and Ryan Condal, who will serve as a co-show runner with Miguel Sapochnik, who directed some of the most memorable Game of Thrones episodes including “The Bells,” “The Long Night” and “Battle of the Bastards.”

The news came out just hours after another Thrones prequel series, starring Naomi Watts, which had already filmed a pilot earlier this year, was not picked up by HBO. This prequel was set to take place thousands of years before the events of the main Game of Thrones series, dealing with issues of power, race and the introduction of the White Walkers.
