Warner Bros. has given the official go-ahead for an unofficial Harry Potter prequel about Voldemort.
Fans have already reacted well to the teaser trailer that dropped earlier this week, with 30 million views on Facebook, and nearly 3 million on YouTube.
Director Gianmaria Pezzato of Tryangle Films confirmed to Polygon that they “had a private and confidential discussion with Warner Bros who contacted us during the period of the crowdfunding campaign. The only thing we can say is that they let us proceed with the film, in a non profit way, obviously.”
Pezzatos and co-director Stefano Prestia are making the film for no profit and will release it for free on YouTube.
The film will tell the story of the rise of the Dark Lord before Harry Potter and his subsequent demise. The idea came from a re-reading the sixth book, which contained clues to the villain’s life story.
When Tryangle Films set out to make a film about Voldemort, they didn’t realize how much attention it would garner. The film was initially funded on Kickstarter, until Warner Bros. noticed it. In July 2016 the project was suspended until they could have a chat with the studio.
