'Harry Potter' Has Biggest Opening In Franchise History

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 hexed its competition, making magic to the tune of $125.1 million at the box office. Not only did the movie easily beat the other movies out this weekend, but it also set a record for its own franchise, making it the biggest debut for any Harry Potter movie to date.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire previously held the debut record with $102.7 million in 2005. Internationally, the movie grossed $330 million in ticket sales. Twenty five percent of the audience was 18-24, compared to ten percent back in 2001 for the first movie in the series, a sign that fans have grown up with the franchise. The second part of the movie, also starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, will open this summer, with plans to release in 3D.

Meanwhile, animated superhero film Megamind held in second with $16.1 million, while Denzel Washington's vehicle Unstoppable made only $13.1 million to land in third. New release The Next Three Days, starring Elizabeth Banks and Russell Crowe, made $6.7 million, good for fifth place. –AMY LEE
