Harrison Ford Injury Update: 'Star Wars' Star Broke Leg, Not Ankle; Had Surgery

Harrison Ford didn’t hurt his ankle while filming a scene for Star Wars: Episode VII, as was originally reported. It's now been confirmed that Ford broke his leg on set, which required him to undergo surgery.

Harrison Ford Broke Leg

Ford’s publicist Ina Treciokas revealed the true nature of the actor’s injury in a statement on Thursday.

“Harrison Ford’s left leg was broken in an accident. His surgery was successful and he will begin rehab shortly,” Treciokas said in a statement, reported Entertainment Weekly. “He’s doing well and looks forward to returning to work.”

Initially, it was suggested that Ford hurt his ankle when he was stuck by the door of the Millennium Falcon by The Hollywood Reporter. The Daily Mail reported that a hydraulic garage door was the cause of the injury. “We were called to Pinewood studios at 5:05 p.m. after reports of a 71-year-old man being injured by a garage door,” a spokesperson for Thames Valley Police told the Mail.

Disney had also claimed that Ford had suffered an injury to his ankle, though they neglected to mention the exact cause and nature of his injury, and insisted that production would go on as scheduled.

"Harrison Ford sustained an ankle injury during filming today on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII,” Disney’s statement read. “He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving care. Shooting will continue as planned while he recuperates.”

In order to stay on schedule, director J.J. Abrams has had to change up the shooting schedule to give Ford time to recover. His scenes as Han Solo have reportedly been shifted later in the shoot and other scenes moved forward.

Star Wars: Episode VII is slated to hit theaters Dec. 18, 2015.
