The “Harlem Shake” craze began with the song by Harry Rodrigues, a 23-year-old DJ who goes by the name Baauer. The song has nothing to do with Harlem or the original Harlem shake dance – but it inspired a dance video format that’s gone viral. Rodrigues actually got the title of the song from a line in Philadelphia rapper Plastic Little’s “Miller Time."
“A friend had shown me that track where he says, then do the Harlem shake, and it just got stuck in my head for a while, so I used it,” Rodrigues told the Daily Beast. The first to make a music video of the song was comedian Filthy Frank who made the first upload of the “Harlem Shake” on Feb. 2. However, it was TheSunnyCoastSkate group from Australia that are credited with shaping the format.
