‘Halloween’ (2018) Movie Review Roundup: Critics Giving It A Thumbs Up

Halloween, a sequel to the original horror film Halloween, picks back up 40 years after Laurie Strode survived the vicious attacked from Michael Myers on Halloween night. Myers is seen locked in an institution but manages to escape when his bus transfer goes wrong. Strode now faces the terrifying return of Myers to Haddonfield, Illinois, but this time she is fully prepared.

The movie will be released today, October 19, and so far it has received an 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Halloween was written and directed by David Gordon Green, Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley. The movie has received many mixed reviews, but critics are still impressed with the overall sequel to the original 1978 classic.

“Halloween is proof that horror icons never truly die. To come back to life, they just need a little love.”

Adam GrahamThe Detroit News

“Director Green isn’t trying to reinvent the squeal. “Halloween,” the 2018 version, is the B-movie sequel “Halloween,” the 1978 version, has always deserved.”

Richard RoeperChicago Sun-Times

“In elevating Laurie’s role from screaming survivor to gritty grandma, this “Halloween” does provide an element of female empowerment. That’s offset, however, by all the women who wind up on the chopping block, and a lack of consistent wit — beyond a few comedic moments — in terms of the set-up or execution.”

Brian Lowry, CNN

“Halloween started as a slasher movie done with an inventive talent for the game by Carpenter. That Green’s sequel works as well as it does — it’s still a slasher movie — is due only in part to the director and his collaborators’ copycat admiration for Carpenter’s blueprint. Mostly it’s the troubled times we live in that allows this energizing, elemental horror film to touch a raw nerve for #MeToo.”

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

“What once seemed creepy now just seems campy. I’m sorry to report that in the 2018 Halloween, the howls sound more like giggles than screams.”
