Hafthor Bjornsson, who plays The Mountain on Game of Thrones, set a new deadlift world record.
The 29-year-old Icelandic actor lifted 1,041 pounds in the 2018 Arnold Strongman Classic. Bjornsson garnered 45.5 total points, beating his score last year, where he placed in second. He managed to defeat his rival and four-time World’s Strongest Man champion Brian Shaw, who came in second this year.
In his first event, the Icelandic heavyweight launched a 43 kg (94.7 lb) bag over a 15-foot bar. In another event, competitors lifted an awkward and heavy stone up to their shoulders as many times as they could within a certain time frame. Bjornsson came in third during the timber carry, where each person must carry a heavy wooden apparatus to the top of a hill, but it helped extend his lead.

But the deadlift event was the actor’s best – he lifted 472 kg (1,040.58 lbs) on the bar, the most any man has ever lifted in competition.
Bjornsson took to Instagram to share his win and to thank his family and friends who supported him. “What an amazing weekend! I want to say thank you to all my friends and family who were able to be there and support me through the Arnold’s, as well as all my friends, family, coaches, and fans whom were unable to make it. #ArnoldStrongmanChampion,” the 6-foot-nine-inch Iceland strongman wrote on the social media site.
