Gypsy Rose Blanchard, whose case gained national attention after her involvement in her mother’s 2015 murder, announced Tuesday that she is expecting her first child.
Blanchard, 32, revealed in a YouTube video that she is 11 weeks pregnant. The father is her boyfriend, Ken Urker, 31. The baby is due in January 2025.
“This was not planned at all, it was completely unexpected, but we’re both very excited to take on this new journey of parenthood,” Blanchard said in the video.
The announcement comes just months after Blanchard’s release from prison in December 2023. She served eight years of a 10-year sentence for her role in the death of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard.
Blanchard’s case gained notoriety due to the years of medical abuse she endured at the hands of her mother, who was believed to have Munchausen syndrome by proxy. This rare condition involves a caregiver fabricating or inducing illness in another person, often for attention or sympathy.
In the video, Blanchard addressed concerns about her readiness for motherhood. “I know that there are going to be people who feel like I’m not ready to be a mother,” she said. “I don’t know if anyone’s really ready to be a mother.”
She became emotional when discussing her hopes for her child. “All the things that I wanted in a mother, I want to give to this baby,” Blanchard said. “I want to be everything my mother wasn’t.”
Blanchard’s personal life has been full of ups and downs since her incarceration. She and Urker were previously engaged while she was in prison but broke up in 2022. Blanchard then married Louisiana teacher Ryan Anderson in a prison ceremony in July 2022, but they separated in March. She and Urker have since reunited.
The pregnancy announcement is the latest development in Blanchard’s life after her release. In a recent CNN interview, she stated, “Getting to prison was a chance to start a life for myself in terms of gaining independence from everyone.”
Blanchard’s case has been the subject of numerous documentaries and television series. Her story continues to draw media attention as she navigates life after incarceration and now, impending motherhood.
