Gwyneth Paltrow Sued For $3.1 Million Over Utah Ski Crash

Gwyneth Paltrow is currently facing a $3.1 million lawsuit from a Utah doctor who claims that the actress crashed into him from behind while skiing at a Utah ski resort in 2016.

Terry Sanderson, the retired optometrist that is suing the Oscar-winning actress, alleged that Paltrow, “was skiing out of control” at the Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah, and is now asking for $3.1 million for damages caused by the alleged crash.

In the lawsuit describing the incident, Sanderson said that Paltrow was involved in “a hit-and-run ski crash at Deer Valley, Utah,” in which Paltrow allegedly him in the back “knocking him down, landing on top of him, and causing him to suffer a concussion, brain injury, and four broken ribs.”

He also claims that after the collision Paltrow then “got up, turned and skied away, leaving Sanderson stunned, lying in the snow, seriously injured.” An acquaintance, Craig Ramon, who witnessed the event, claimed he saw Paltrow hit him in the back.

“Gwyneth Paltrow knew it was wrong to slam into Dr. Sanderson’s back, knocking him down, landing on top of him, knocking him out and then leave the scene of the skit crash she caused, but she did it anyway,” Sanderson alleged in the lawsuit.

Paltrow has denied the allegations and her spokesperson Heather Wilson said in an emailed statement: “This lawsuit is without merit and we expect to be vindicated.”

Deer Valley Resort and two unnamed resort employees and Deer Valley ski instructor, Eric Christiansen, who accompanied the actress and filed a false report alleging Paltrow did not cause the crash, are also being sued.

Sanderson, who said it took him nearly three years to file a lawsuit because of problems with previous attorneys and the inability to function properly because of the concussion, alleged in his lawsuit that he suffered from serious injuries including a “permanent traumatic brain injury,” four broken ribs, suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, pain, and emotional distress and disfigurement.

He also said that he has been in contact with an attorney representing Paltrow, but has never been offered any compensation or an apology. Now, Sanderson is seeking $3.1 million in damages but denies that he’s suing just because of Paltrow’s rich celebrity status. He feels that it was an unkind gesture to leave him on the slopes and to never acknowledge or apologize for what happened.

“I would like to be vindicated,” 72-year-old Sanderson said. “I would like my truth to be told.”

At a news conference on Tuesday, Sanderson’s attorney, Robert Sykes said when speaking of the amount of damages Sanderson is seeking that “for a brain injury, that might be low.” Sykes also claimed that Paltrow violated the reckless skiing provision of the Summit County code, which requires a skier to stay at the scene of a crash to make sure the other skier is ok.
