Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton brought their new duet, “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” to the 2016 Billboard Music Awards stage this weekend.
Stefani and Shelton, who started dating while they were both coping with the ends of their respective marriages while serving as mentors on The Voice, are music’s new it couple. The two singers joined forces Sunday night in Las Vegas to deliver a performance of the emotional song.
Speaking to Ellen DeGeneres in a segment that’s slated to air Monday afternoon, Shelton admitted that singing the duet together sometimes makes them laugh. While the track is admittedly one of the more personal and honest songs either has ever written, Shelton and Stefani have moved on from the place they were at when they first started working on it.
“We kind of did laugh a few times. There’s moments where it’s like, Wow, we’re singing this song like we’re going to break up, and we’re not breaking up right now, so it seems kind of weird,” Shelton explained. “When we wrote the song, we never saw it going there, I don’t know that we ever really saw it going anywhere. I only started the song to impress her. To be like, ‘Hey, I’m writing a song about ya.'”
Shelton added, “So I sent it to her, and then she wrote the other half of the song. I was like, ‘Oh, she just one-upped me,’ so …”
