Gunman Connor Sturgeon’s Mother Called 911 During Louisville Bank Shooting

Louisville Metropolitan Police released 911 calls from frantic witnesses of a mass shooting at a downtown bank, revealing new details surrounding the horrific event. The mass shooting occurred on Monday when 25-year-old Connor Sturgeon, who live-streamed the massacre, used an AR-15-style rifle to shoot his co-workers at Old National Bank in Louisville, Kentucky, 30 minutes before the bank was set to open.

He killed five co-workers and injured eight others, including 26-year-old rookie police officer Nicholas Wilt, who was shot in the head after only just graduating from the police academy 10 days prior to the shooting.

According to the 911 calls released on Wednesday, the first caller was from an Old National Bank employee who worked at a different branch but witnessed the shooting on video during a morning staff meeting. “I just watched it on a Teams meeting. We were having a board meeting,” she said sounding distressed. “I saw somebody on the floor. We heard multiple shots and people started saying ‘Oh my God,’ and then he came into the board room.”

Another call came from a bank employee who was hiding in a closet as she called 911. Several gunshots can be heard as she tells the operator that she knows the gunman. “I know who it is. He works with us.”

The audio files also revealed that a call was made by the gunman’s mother who warned the police that her son “has a gun and heading to the Old National on Main Street here in Louisville,” she said. “This is his mother. I’m so sorry, I’m getting details second-hand. I’m learning about it now. Oh my Lord.”

She explained that Sturgeon’s roommate had informed her that he had “left a note” about his intentions, but that she was shocked and confused because he “didn’t even own a gun.”

“He’s never hurt anyone, he’s a really good kid,” she said. “We don’t even own guns. I don’t know where he would have gotten a gun.”

Another 911 caller informed the operator that Wilt had been shot by the gunman, “I just wanted to make sure you understood that there was an officer down,” the 911 caller said. “There are several officers here now, but the one hasn’t moved since he’s been shot. … I haven’t seen a foot or anything moving.”

Co-workers described Sturgeon, who according to his LinkedIn had worked at the bank for over a year, as “extremely intelligent.” Other friends and acquaintances also expressed their shock, with a former high school classmate saying that the shooting was a total shock.

In a statement released to WDRB, the gunman’s family wrote, “No words can express our sorrow, anguish, and horror at the unthinkable harm our son Connor inflicted on innocent people, their families, and the entire Louisville community. We mourn their loss and that of our son, Connor. We pray for everyone traumatized by his senseless acts of violence and are deeply grateful for the bravery and heroism of the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department.”

“While Connor, like many of his contemporaries, had mental health challenges which we, as a family, were actively addressing, there were never any warning signs or indications he was capable of this shocking act,” the family explained. “While we have many unanswered questions, we will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement officials and do all we can to aid everyone in understanding why and how this happened,” they concluded.

In addition to the audio files, the police also released footage on Tuesday of the police responding to the shooting.
