Vice President Kamala Harris told talk show host Oprah Winfrey that if anyone breaks into her home is going to “get shot.”
Harris made this comment while discussing gun violence on Thursday night during the live-streamed event Unite For America hosted by Winfrey.
“Look, I think for far too long on the issue of gun violence — some people have been pushing a really false choice to suggest you’re either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone’s away,” the vice president said.
“I’m in favor of the Second Amendment, and I’m in favor of assault weapons bans, universal background checks, red flag laws and these are just common sense – these are just common sense,” she said while receiving applause from the crowd.
Winfrey then interjected, saying that she “thought it was so powerful” when Harris said at the debate with former President Donald Trump on September 10 that they owned guns.
“I’m a gun owner,” Haris stated. “[Gov.] Tim Walz [(D-Minnesota)] is a gun owner.”
“If somebody breaks in my house, they’re getting shot,” she declared, to which the audience responded with laughter.
“Probably should not have said that,” she added. “My staff deal with that later.”
Harris was praised on social media for forcing Trump to shake her hand while they took the stage at the presidential debate.
While they stepped onto the stage, marking the first time they met face-to-face, the former president headed to his lectern, and his opponent walked across the stage. After a short moment of hesitation, she offered her hand.
Many X users thought Harris forcing Trump to shake her hand was a “power move.”
