The Santa Fe County Sheriff on Wednesday said the gun discharged by actor Alec Baldwin on the set of Rust fired a “suspected live round.”
Investigators have said that they believe that they recovered the bullet that hit Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza.
“The facts are clear: a weapon was handed to Mr. Baldwin. The weapon is functional and fired a live round, killing Ms. Hutchins and injuring Mr. Souza,” Sheriff Adan Mendoza said at a press conference.
About 500 rounds of ammunition, a mix of blanks, dummy and live rounds, were recovered from the set alongside three guns.
The evidence will be submitted to the FBI, and authorities plan to interview over 100 people who were on the set that day to try and figure out how the situation happened.
Baldwin was practicing a cross-draw when he accidentally discharged the weapon. He had previously been very careful with firearms on set and was apparently heartbroken at the tragic accident.
“There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours,” he wrote on Twiter. “I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.”
