British tabloid Express claimed today that Grumpy Cat—the Internet meme that spawned an empire—thanks to speaking engagements, public appearances, product endorsements, merchandise, and a TV movie has earned $99.5 million over the last two years.
Grumpy Cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce, makes her money through appearances at conventions like SXSW and Comic-Con. Her owner Tabatha Bundesen and manager Ben Lashes sold Tardar Sauce’s licensing for a variety of products, including a series children’s books, greeting cards, Friskies cat food, coffee drinks called Grumpucchinos, and a made-for-TV movie Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever premiered on Lifetime over Thanksgiving weekend which starred Aubrey Plaza, who provided the voice of Grumpy Cat.
Bundesen rejected claims of a $99.5 million profit in an interview with the Huffington Post today, but did not elaborate with a figure of her own.
