Groundhog Day Result: Punxsutawney Phil Sees Shadow, 6 More Weeks Of Winter

Today marks Groundhog Day, a tradition in the United States where we see the result of whether a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil will come out of his home in the ground, or see his shadow and go back underground.

As today is a sunny day, Phil did indeed see his shadow, thus predicting in another six weeks of winter. This tradition dates back to 1886 in the Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney. This year was Phil’s 131st prediction about the changing of the seasons in the U.S. Hundreds joined a crowd on Gobbler’s Knob to watch as the groundhog made his prognostication at around 7:15 a.m.

In other parts of the country, however, some did not agree with Phil’s prediction. Staten Island Chuck, the groundhog at the Staten Island Zoo in New York, called an early spring. Chuck is credited with having the highest accuracy rating for this event, at 80%. And in Nova Scotia, Canada, Schubenacadie Sam agreed with Chuck.

Apparently this morning, Punxsutawney Phil was difficult to wake, with the crowd chanting his name before he would emerge. “He’s squealin’, he’s hollerin’,” the emcee said before lifting Phil onto a stump per tradition.
