It’s the age-old question: which came first, the chicken or the egg? While Lady Gaga has previously donned a dress made of meat products, at last night’s Grammy Awards she went back to basics (or should we say embryos), hitting the red carpet in a egg-shaped “womb” designed by Hussein Chalayan. Gaga, who told Anderson Cooper she “just didn’t want to wear clothes” to the 53rd annual ceremony, remained virtually unseen upon arrival, carried by an entourage of bronzed men and women before “hatching” onstage during her performance of “Born This Way.”
Once free from her shell, the singer performed her anthem of self-acceptance in a golden crop-top and full-length skirt, wide brim hat, and severely pointed shoulders amidst a bevy of shimmering dancers, before changing into a dominatrix-style mini black catsuit to accept her award for Best Pop Vocal Album (“The Fame Monster”). The singer-songwriter concluded her acceptance speech with a shout-out to diva Whitney Houston, apparent inspiration during the inception of “Born This Way.” “I need to say thank you tonight to Whitney Houston,” she told the audience. “I wanted to thank Whitney because when I wrote 'Born This Way,' I imagined she was singing it because I wasn't secure enough in myself to imagine I was a superstar. So Whitney, I imagined you were singing 'Born This Way' when I wrote it. Thank you." Congrats, Whitney. Your very own egg is on its way. —Emily Exton
