Ohio Gov. John Kasish was in New Hampshire this week with gubernatorial candidate Chris Sununu, when he noticed a Harry Potter book in a local bookstore.
“You know that Daniel Radcliffe has declared himself an atheist?” Kasich said in response to seeing the cover. “I’m serious. What a weird thing. Why would a guy who has had all that success just, I mean, what the hell is wrong with him?”
Radcliffe has been very open about his atheism. “I’m an atheist, but I’m very relaxed about it,” he said in a 2009 interview. “I don’t preach my atheism.”
Kasich, on the other hand, was raised as “a card-carrying Catholic” He lost his faith as a young adult, but felt “there was a huge hold in my life where God and religion had been.” He returned to the faith after his parents were killed by a drunk driver in 1987, and has been going to Bible study biweekly for the past 20 years.
The governor quickly changed the subject in the bookshop to the Rio Olympics, and then finally to the point of his visit, the 2016 presidential election, during which he has been a Trump detractor.
Radcliffe, who keeps his private life private and lacks any social media accounts, has yet to respond to Kasich’s question.
