On Wednesday, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Florida) revealed that his residence in Naples was targeted in a “swatting” incident Wednesday night.
In a post on X, Scott condemned the act and expressed gratitude towards law enforcement agencies for their response.
“Last night, while at dinner with my wife, cowards ‘swatted’ my home in Naples. These criminals wasted the time & resources of our law enforcement in a sick attempt to terrorize my family.”
Swatting refers to the act of falsely reporting a crime or emergency to authorities in order to prompt a police response at a specific location.
Lt. Bryan McGinn, spokesperson for the Naples Police Department, confirmed that the department received a call about a shooting on its non-emergency line, but upon investigation, it was determined to be a swatting event. The incident is currently under active investigation.
The incident report associated with the swatting call recorded a male caller who claimed to have shot his wife with an AR-15 while she was asleep. However, when police arrived at Scott’s residence, the security officer on-site was unaware of any calls or issues. Officers thoroughly searched the exterior of the property and found no signs of forced entry. Scott, upon being informed, requested a search of the interior, but nothing found matched the caller’s description.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office directed inquiries to the Naples Police Department for further information.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) has also been targeted in multiple swatting incidents at her residence in Georgia, which included one on Christmas Day.
Major Rodney Bailey of the Rome Police Department in Georgia confirmed that a person based in Rome, New York, called a suicide hotline and claimed to have shot his girlfriend at Greene’s address and threatened self-harm. The local security liaison contacted Greene’s team to inform them of the call, and police canceled their response while en route to her home.
