GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Suggests Without Evidence That House Speaker Mike Johnson Is Being ‘Blackmailed’ Into Supporting Ukraine Aid

As the House moves to vote on Ukraine aid this weekend, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) suggested, without any evidence, that House Speaker Mike Johnson might be being “blackmailed.”

“Mike Johnson has made a complete departure of who he is and what he stands for,” Greene told conservative commentator Tucker Carlson during an interview on his show, Tucker Carlson Uncensored. “And to the point where people are literally asking — is he being blackmailed? What is wrong with him? Because he’s completely disconnected with what we want.”

Carlson asked her if she believed that Johnson was being blackmailed.

“I have no idea,” the Georgia Representative responded. “I can’t comprehend, Tucker.”

During the interview, Greene listed off more policy areas she feels that Johnson has not paid attention to, such as border security, anti-abortion and anti-trans legislation.

“I mean, what in the world happened?” she asked. “And you can’t help but wonder, what do they have on him? Is he being blackmailed? What would make this man do this?”

In a statement, Johnson tried making peace with Greene.

“I respect Marjorie,” he stated. “She will always have an open door to the Speaker’s office. We do have honest differences on strategy sometimes but share the same conservative beliefs.” 

He had blamed her frustrations on Republicans’ slim majority in the GOP.

“In spite of our Republican majority of just a single seat in just one chamber of Congress, we are still fighting this administration every day to make policy changes,” the House speaker said. “A shutdown would not serve our party or assist us in our mission of saving the republic by growing our majority, nor will another motion to vacate.”

Both Johnson and Greene stated they plan to settle their differences soon.  

On March 22, Greene filed a motion to oust Johnson as House Speaker.

She did not file the motion as a special bill—which has a vote forced within two legislative days—but instead, as a regular motion, which means it would be referred to a committee, where it may never be taken up.

Greene mentioned in a speech on the House floor that the GOP majority was “a failure” and even claimed to reporters that Johnson passed “three hours and then” forced citizens of America “to pass an hour to vote on a two-part omnibus, the second one being today.”

Greene has been constantly in the news for a string of bizarre comments. 

Earlier this month, Greene said that the 4.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the New York City and New Jersey areas on April 5 was a sign from God. 

Following the earthquake, she created a post to X, urging Americans “to repent.”
