It was 172 years ago today that Auguste Rodin, the French artist who is considered the father of modern sculpture and is most famous for his iconic masterpieces, The Thinker and The Kiss, was born, and Google has honored the occasion with its coveted Google Doodle, which presents a blue-tinged sketch of The Thinker in front of the second "o" in "Google."
The Thinker was built by Rodin 110 years ago in 1902, and it has since become one of the most recognized and copied figures in art. Rodin, who was heavily influenced by the works on Michelangelo, placed an emphasis on musculature and movement in his works.
"The increasingly erotic character of Rodin’s sculpture can be explained by his preoccupation with two highly charged literary sources. These were Dante’s Inferno and Baudelaire’s The Flowers of Evil,” says Rodin's bio on the Metropolitan Museum of Art website.
The original sculpture of The Thinker resides in the Musee Rodin in Paris.
