Golden Globes Acknowledge Lack Of Diversity In HFPA, Tina Fey & Amy Poehler Mock Organization In Opening

In a year when racial injustice came to the forefront, the Golden Globes was definitely not keeping up with the times.

In the show’s opening monologue, co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler brought attention to the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) lacks any black members in the organization. “The HFPA is made up of about 90 international – no black – journalists,” Fey said.

“This is something we probably should have told you earlier, everyone is understandably upset at the HFPA and their choices,” Poehler added. “A lot of flashy garbage got nominated. But that happens, that’s, like, their thing. A number of black actors and black-led projects were overlooked.”

Fey called for change in the future, “Inclusivity is important and there are no black members of the HFPA. I realize you didn’t get the memo, HFPA, because your workplace is the back booth of a French McDonald’s but you gotta change that.”

Not long after the start of the program, three members of the HFPA – Meher Tatna, Helen Hoehne and Ali Sar appeared onstage to address the lack of diversity. “We must ensure everyone from all underrepresented communities get a seat and our table, and we are going to make that happen,” Tatna said.

“Just like in film and television, black representation is vital,” said Hoehne. “We must have black journalists in our organization.”
