Golden Globe Nominations 2016: ‘Carol’ Leads With 5 Nods [FULL LIST]

The 2016 Golden Globe nominations were announced Thursday morning, revealing the top rated films, TV shows and performances, according to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Leading with five nominations is Todd Haynes’ Carol, the adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel The Price of Salt, which tells the story of an unlikely romance between housewife Carol (Cate Blanchett) and young shopgirl Therese (Rooney Mara). It is nominated for Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Director (Haynes) and Best Score (Carter Burwell). Both Blanchett and Mara are nominated in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama category.

Other dramas nominated in the top category include Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, Room and Spotlight. The Big Short, Joy, The Martian, Spy and Trainwreck all received nods for Best Motion Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

Among those joining Blanchett and Mara for leading film acting nods include Brie Larson (The Room), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Will Smith (Concussion).

In TV, Empire, Games of Thrones, Mr. Robot, Narcos and Outlander were nominated in the Best TV Drama category. Best TV Comedy nods went to Casual, Mozart in the Jungle, Orange is the New Black, Silicon Valley, Transparent and Veep. 

Robin Wright (House of Cards), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Taraji P. Henson (Empire), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) Eva Green (Penny Dreadful) and Wagner Moura (Narcos) are among those nominated in the drama TV acting categories. Comedy TV acting nods went to Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie), Aziz Ansari (Master of None), Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) and Julia Louis Dreyfus (Veep).

The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards, which will be hosted by Ricky Gervais, will air on NBC Jan. 10.
