Gold Megalodon Shark Tooth Necklace Found During Search Of Titanic Wreck

A gold necklace has been found in the Titanic shipwreck and is believed to be made from the tooth of a megalodon shark.

The Titanic sank on April 14, 1912, after hitting an iceberg killing more than 1,500 people. The firm Magellan Ltd. has been taking digital scans of the Titanic’s remains since 2022 to create footage that shows the Titanic in its entirety. These scans allow people to see the Titanic as if it were above water. When the Titanic crashed into the iceberg it began to sink bow-first.

Before the entire boat sank, it broke in half, resulting in the ship still being split in half today, which is not a commonly known fact. The digital scans allow viewers to see the boat split and see all the details of the wreck including the hole where the staircase used to be as well as the personal possessions of the passengers left behind.

The necklace was discovered during this expedition after the scans were taken. Experts first saw only the shark tooth, but through the footage, they were able to identify the necklace. It is believed that the tooth comes from the megalodon shark, but it is difficult to confirm this due to the blurriness of the photos. From what experts can see though, they do believe that it does in fact belong to this shark.

IN MEMORIAM 2022: 100 GREAT CELEBRITIES WHO DIED IN 2022

The megalodon shark went extinct 2.6 million years ago and was one of the largest known sharks. Since they are extinct, it makes the necklace even more rare.

Magellan’s goal is to locate who owned the necklace by using AI technology. The technology is going to focus on each passenger that was on the Titanic to analyze what they were wearing in order to locate the owner. Once they find the owner they will then connect with their ancestors. The necklace has not been extracted from the water due to an agreement between the U.S. and the U.K. that artifacts from the wreck cannot be removed.
