Hollywood star Glen Powell is trading movie sets for textbooks as he returns to the University of Texas at Austin to complete his undergraduate degree.

The 35-year-old actor, known for his roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, is set to finish his studies in Spanish and Early American History through a combination of distance learning and occasional campus visits.

Powell, who left UT after his freshman year to pursue acting, said that the university is accommodating his busy schedule. “They’re letting me figure it out with distance learning,” he told IndieWire. The actor plans to attend classes via Zoom and return to campus two or three times per semester for proctored exams.

The decision to complete his degree comes at a busy time for Powell, who is currently working on Edgar Wright‘s upcoming film The Running Man, an adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel. Wright has reportedly been supportive of Powell’s educational pursuits.

Powell’s motivations for finishing his degree are both personal and practical. In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he mentioned the importance of the achievement to his mother and himself, noting, “I’m so close, I can taste it.”

The actor’s return to academia follows a string of successful film projects. His recent romantic comedy Anyone But You was a box office hit, and he’s set to star in the highly anticipated Twisters, a follow-up to the 1996 blockbuster Twister.

Powell was in the news last fall over a rumor relationship with his Anyone But You costar, Sydney Sweeney.
