Legendary rocker Glen Campbell can no longer play the guitar due to Alzheimer’s disease.
The 80-year-old was diagnosed with the disease in 2011 though continued touring until 2014, when he was moved to a long-term care facility. His wife of 34 years, Kim Campbell, still visits most days. “Doctors say that because Glen continued to do music it probably helped him plateau in the early and middle stages,” she explains.
According to Kim, the rocker can no longer speak and has trouble understanding most words. Though he can play air guitar, Campbell can no longer handle the strings on an actual guitar. His attempts to sing come out as gibberish. “But he still has his essence,” says Kim.
Kim hopes to help others who are in similar situations to herself. “I want to let people know that there’s hope out there. There’s help out there,” she said. “They don’t have to do this alone. They can’t do it alone. It will take you down.”
