‘Glee’ Will End After Sixth Season, Says Ryan Murphy
Glee’s current fifth season will be the FOX musical dramedy’s penultimate, according to series co-creator Ryan Murphy, who says the sixth will be it’s final fun.
A major arc throughout Glee’s first four seasons was the romance between aspiring Broadway starlet Rachel Berry and star quarterback-turned-Glee club captain Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith). While Glee’s sixth season had already been set up to be its last, according to Murphy, Montieth’s death majorly impacted how he will wrap up the show.
"The whole [last] year of the show — which will be next year — was really designed around Rachel-Cory/Finn story," Murphy said, according to Entertainment Weekly. "I always knew that. I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was — he was in it. I knew what the last line was; she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do."
Some fans believe that Murphy’s vision of Glee’s series finale was relayed through Rachel during last week’s tribute episode to Monteith, “The Quarterback.” After singing Adele’s version of Bob Dylan’s "Make You Feel My Love," Berry opens up to Mr. Shue (Matthew Morrison) about how she’d dreamt about how her future with Finn would start.
“I had it all planned out. I was going to make it big on Broadway. And maybe do a Woody Allen movie,” she says, leaning on the choir room piano. “And then when we were ready, I would just come back, and he’d be teaching here. And I’d walk through those doors, and I’d just say, ‘I’m home.’ And then we would live happily ever after.”
Whether or not that had been Murphy’s intention, he’s been forced to go back to the drawing board. The new ending, which will shortly be presented to the studio and network, Murphy is, relatively speaking, happy with. “ “I think it’s very satisfactory and kind of in [Cory’s] honor, which I love.”
Glee is currently on hiatus for the MLB World Series. It will pick up again on Nov. 7 with lighter episode titled “A Katy or a Gaga.”
