Glee went topical again for this week’s episodes – “The End of Twerk” – not surprisingly tackling the controversial dance move (and the song) that rocked the VMAs earlier this year.

Thinking he’s all alone cleaning the choir room, Blaine (Darren Criss) gets his twerk on. Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) passes by and records his racy moves to share with the class. Mr. Shuester (Matthew Morrison) decides not to slut shame Blaine, and instead decides to turn it into a lesson plan – shocking no one. He thinks that learning the dance will up the group’s street cred heading in to nationals and has Jake (Jacob Artist) and Kitty (Becca Tobin) teach the class. It’s a complete mess, and makes a complete mess for Will, as Sue (Jane Lynch) catches the act in progress.

When Sue blasts twerking on her local TV news show, Will decides to take a stand. “Twerking is about blurring the lines,” he says. “Sue Sylvester wants to draw a line in the sand? Well we’re gonna blur it!” And blur it they do, putting on a twerk-filled performance of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” walking through the school and into the auditorium where a dance orgy ensues. Sue calls him into the office and fires him – shocking no one but the New Directions coach.

Appealing his termination to the school board, Will brings them to the auditorium and puts on an “Evolution of the Controversial Dance” presentation to show than banning the twerk is regressive. First there was the waltz, followed by the Charleston, rock’ roll gyrations, the twist and then the lambada. Case made. The board reinstates his employment.

Elsewhere at McKinley, Unique (Alex Newell) is struggling with using the high school bathrooms as a transgender girl. She’s been secretly using the girls room, but when Bree catches her, she goes and uses the boys’ bathroom. She gets harassed by the football players and her wigs gets flushed down a toilet. Unique then delivers a truly powerful version of Beyoncé’s “If I Were a Boy,” which inspires the glee club guys to rise to her defense. It also leads to Mr. Shue to make a deal with Sue to outlaw twerking in glee so Unique can have her own key to the faculty bathroom.

Over in New York, Rachel (Lea Michele) visits the hair salon and then heads to Funny Girl rehearsals, where her director Rupert is appalled by her unflattering bob cut. She and her costar then sing Funny Girl song “You Are Woman, I Am Man,” which serves as New York’s tie in to Lima’s “Blurred Lines” theme. In any case, Rupert loves what she did with the song. Rachel returns home and tells Kurt (Chris Colfer) about how she fooled the director with the wig and then inspires him to come with her to get a tattoo. They go drunk on limoncello and Kurt accidentally gets “It’s Get Better” and Rachel comes home with nothing. In the end, Kurt goes back and changes it to read “It’s Got Bette Midler” and Rachel reveals in the privacy of her room that on her midriff reads “Finn.”

Marley (Melissa Benoist) finally learns from Bree that Jake and her have been hooking up. Jake can’t deny it, so Marley decides to get out her angst by singing “Wrecking Ball.” It’s an intentionally awkward performance with a clothed Marley swinging on a wrecking ball into a literal brick wall and falling into a foam pit. The intent of the performance didn’t make it any easier to watch.

A cheery and uplifting group number in the auditorium to The Royal Concept’s “On Our Way” devoid of much context closed out the episode.
