Gisele Bundchen Won’t Be ‘Robbed’ During Rio 2016 Opening Ceremonies Sketch
Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen will feature prominently during the Opening Ceremony for Rio 2016 — but she won’t be robbed.

Bunchen participated in a dress rehearsal for Rio 2016’s Opening Ceremony earlier this week. Onlookers claimed that it looked as though Bunchen was robbed and assaulted in the sketch, and the offending party apprehended. The reports about the sketch caused a stir, as it would seem to be in poor taste for Brazil – which is already facing safety concerns – to stage a mock mugging.
Fernando Meirelles, the Brazilian filmmaker who helmed the acclaimed City of God, is directing the Opening Ceremony at Maracana stadium in Rio de Janiero. He refuted the notion that he had put together such a scene. He explained that the scene had been misinterpreted in an email to the Washington Post.
“Imagine us doing a scene like that (showing a robbery) in the opening. I’m not that clueless,” he wrote. “It was a gag that was not funny so we cut it. There was nothing that looked like a robbery in the scene except two security guards chasing after a vendor. They are three professional clowns.”
Regardless of what Meirelles’ intention has been, he has decided to rework the scene, as to avoid confusion.
“There will be no robbery,” a spokesman for organizers told AFP.
The 2016 Summer Olympic Games will kick off Friday, Aug. 5.
