The news that was first leaked in mid-October has finally been confirmed. There will be new episodes of 2000s favorite (and current Netflix favorite) Gilmore Girls on Netflix.
Confirmation first came from Lauren Graham, who plays Lorelei Gilmore on the show:
Netflix’s confirmation of the show came in a more cryptic form:
This project will be produced by Dorothy Parker of Drank Here Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Creator and executive producer Amy Sherman-Palladino will return, along with her husband, another executive producer, Daniel Palladino, to write and direct all the Netflix originals. Alexis Bledel, Lauren Graham, Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, Sean Gunn and Keiko Agena have all confirmed their return to the much-loved dramedy. (No word from Melissa McCarthy yet though.) Deadline reported that the Netflix revival will consist of four 90-minute episodes.
Six of the seven existing Gilmore Girls seasons were made under Sherman-Palladino’s direction, before she left under a contract dispute with the studio. Sherman Palladino shared in 2009 with Entertainment Weekly that the show didn’t end the way that she had envisioned it (although she hadn’t watched the last season herself). So this will give Shermna-Palladino the chance to get the last word on how the Gilmore girls end up. Maybe she’ll even get to include the elusive final four words that she had intended to end the show with.
This is the second of the new trend of Netflix revivals, the first being a continuation of ABC’s Full House under the brand Fuller House.
Filming is set to begin next week. Although we don’t have an exact airing date, Netflix Instagram photos seem to imply that we won’t have to wait long.
