Anderson will reportedly play Media — “the mouthpiece for the New Gods”— in the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel.
Media takes the form of celebrities to serve as the New Gods “public face and sales representative,” encouraging the public to worship their laptops, TVs, and smartphones.
Anderson will reunite with Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, who is co-showrunner of American Gods alongside Michael Green. Hannibal director David Slade is also expected to work as director on the Starz series.
Deadwood star Ian McShane and The 100 actor Ricky Whittle, are set to join the cast as Mr. Wednesday and Shadow Moon. Emily Browning is set to play Laura Moon, Shadow Moon’s wife.
Mr. Wednesday and Shadow Moon plan to gather forces to take down the New Gods, who want to terminate the older, more traditional gods.
American Gods is expected to premiere in 2017.
