Gigi Hadid co-hosted the American Music Awards on Sunday, and received a lot of flak for her impression of future First Lady Melania Trump.
The actress and model took to Twitter to post a handwritten apology note, saying everything she did at the show was “in good humor and with no bad intent.”
At the AMAs, Hadid put on her best Melania face, and joked, “I love my husband, Barack Obama, and our children, Sasha and Malia.” The joke poked fun at Melania’s recent plagiarism scandal in which she was caught repeating lines from a speech given by First Lady Michelle Obama.
While it is unclear why Hadid felt the need to apologize, she posted the following statement online:
“I was honored to host the AMAs last night and to work with some of the most respected writers in the business. I removed or changed anything in the script that I felt took the joke too far, and whether or not you choose to see it, what remained was done in good humor and with no bad intent. I too have been the center of a nationally televised comedy skit that poked fun at my actions and was able to find the humor in it. I believe Melania understands show business and the way shows are written and run. I apologize to anyone that I have offended & have only the best wishes for our country. Respectfully, Gigi.”
Felow co-host and former SNL personality Jay Pharoah stuck up for Hadid in a Facebook post, where he reminded people of the horrible things that had been said about Michelle Obama in the past, and said that Melania is getting it easy.
