Gerard Depardieu, the lauded French actor, recently copped to imbibing up to 14 bottles of wine per day – and not getting drunk.
Depardieu revealed that he's not your average "bon vivant," claiming his constitution allows him to drink 14 bottles of wine daily in an interview with So Film U.K. "I can’t drink like a normal person," he said. "I can absorb 12, 13, 14 bottles per day."
The 65-year-old then proceeded to lay out his daily eating and drinking rituals. "In the morning, it starts at home with champagne or red wine before 10am, then again champagne," he said. "Then food, accompanied by two bottles of wine. In the afternoon, champagne, beer and more pastis at around 5pm, to finish off the bottle. Later on, vodka and/or whisky. But I’m never totally drunk, just a little p*****d."
Depardieu added, "All you need is a 10-minute nap and voila, a slurp of rose wine and I feel as fresh as a daisy. Anyway, I’m not going to die. Not now. I still have energy."
While the actor is feeling confident about his health these days, back in 2000 he suffered a heart attack. He's also had bypass surgery on a handful of occasions. Mental health expert Professor Michel Lejoyeux has condemned Depardieu's almost boastful account of his excessive drinking habits. "A consumption of 14 bottles a day is beyond all data, all thresholds and health references of the World Health Organization," Lejoyeux told the Daily Mail. "This is proof of the positive vision we have of alcohol poisoning."
Depardieu, who earned a best actor Oscar nod in 1991 for his work in Cyrano de Bergerac, has appeared in dozens of French films. He is best known to American audiences for his parts in Green Card and 2012's Life of Pi.
