George Zimmerman Trial Update: Defense Rests, Zimmerman Won't Testify

George Zimmerman declined to take the stand on Wednesday, leading his defense team to rest their case without the defendant ever testifying on his own behalf.

During the final day of testimony, the defense used witness to characterize Zimmerman as athletically challenged, physically weak and essentially a less able fighter than the late Trayvon Martin. Testimony was heard from law enforcement officials, former co-workers and a past trainer and gym owner Adam Pollock.

At the end of the day, Zimmerman exercised his right to forego testifying on his on behalf, telling Judge Debra Nelson, “Not at this time,” when asked if he wanted to take the stand. "I think we have a very, very good chance with the jury," Zimmerman's defense attorney Mark O’Mara said, explaining the decision.

"He's very worried,” O’Mara continued. “I mean, I think he's happy with the way the evidence got out and that he's finally had an opportunity to have his lawyers present his case for him. But, you know, we still have a case where the state of Florida is trying to put him behind bars for the rest of his life. That's a very scary position to be in."

Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of the 17-year-old unarmed Martin. Zimmerman maintains that he acted in self-defense, while the prosecution claims he unnecessarily took Martin’s life after racially profiling him.

On Thursday afternoon, both the defense and the prosecution will present their closing arguments for the much-publicized murder trial. Nelson hopes to hand the case over to the jury for deliberation on Friday.
