Rapper Jay-Z is currently working on a documentary about 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in Florida in 2012.
Zimmerman, then a neighborhood watch leader, claims Martin was dangerous, but the teen was unarmed and simply walking in his neighborhood. Zimmerman reacted by fatally shooting Martin. The gunman was later tried for second-degree murder, but was found not guilty on all counts. Since the trial, Zimmerman has repeatedly spoken about the death of the teen.
This spring, word came out that Jay-Z was working on a documentary entitled Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story. Despite being involved with the Weinstein Company, the film is still in production.
Now, Zimmerman has threatened Jay-Z and his production, claiming that the film team “harassed” his family. He would not, however, provide any details as to the type of harassment. Zimmerman told The Blast, “I know how to handle people who f–k with me, I have since February 2012.” He also shared that “anyone who f–ks with my parents will be fed to an alligator.”
Many have responded negatively to Zimmerman’s bold statements. “If one hair on jays hair is touched that’s when the revolution will b televised We one 👊🏾and to thank the system let the Bitch ass muthaf—a get away with murder try it again 🙏🏾Trayvon Martin Gone but not forgotten,” said Snoop Dogg in support of Jay-Z and the documentary.
Many more Twitter and Instagram users spoke out against Zimmerman. “Every time I see this bitch George Zimmerman trending I get excited cause I think he died. Nope he’s still mocking Treyvons death and now threatening Jay-Z. Someone please shoot him already,” one user wrote. “‘George Zimmerman Threatens Jay-Z With Violence Over Trayvon Martin Doc’ is basically 2017 flipping you off as it exits the burning building,” said another.
Darcy continued, “[such 'Historic tension'] has resulted in headaches for the networks’ bosses.
