George Zimmerman
George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in 2014, was called as a witness in the trial against Matthew Apperson, who fired a single bullet into Zimmerman’s truck eight months ago.
Apperson has been charged with attempted second-degree murder with a firearm after he shot blindly into Zimmerman’s car in May. Apperson claims that he acted in self-defense, but the prosecutors say he instigated the attack.
Zimmerman took to the witness stand on Tuesday to give his account of what occurred. Zimmerman says he has faced a lot of harassment since the shooting of Martin. He told the court that he and Apperson in particular had hated him for it, and the two spoke about the incident before Apperson picked up a gun.
On Sept. 9, 2014, the pair argued about the killing. Months later, Apperson ran into Zimmerman again and chastised Zimmerman further. “‘You were wrong to kill that little boy,'” Zimmerman remembered Apperson saying at the time. And Zimmerman said he responded, “‘You have no clue what you’re talking about and what I’ve done for the African American community.'”
Apperson claims Zimmerman then followed him and threatened him, and left Apperson to call 911. Zimmerman also recalls that Apperson chose not to press charges earlier “because I wanted to kill you myself.”
Zimmerman will returned to the witness stand this morning at 8:30 am.
