George Zimmerman, who was tried and acquitted in the shooting death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, was shot in the face Monday afternoon.
Zimmerman was shot in Lake Mary, Fla., at about 12:45 p.m. on Lake Mary Boulevard, Police Chief Steve Bracknell told WESH Orlando. It is thought that the shooting could have been related to an “ongoing dispute” between Zimmerman and another party.
According to witnesses at the scene, Zimmerman’s gunshot wound was minor and he was able to walk himself into the ambulance that arrived to take him to a local hospital.
“He walked normally into the ambulance, so he wasn’t being helped or nothing,” said witness Ricardo Berrare. “They actually backed up the ambulance next to his driver side so he could walk into the door.”
“The officer was talking to him through the back window because the other one had a hole in it. It was all shattered,” Berrare added.
Zimmerman was last in the news back in January when his girlfriend accused him of assault and later recanted her claims. Before that, he was last arrested in November 2013 on domestic violence allegations. There has also been an alleged road rage incident, and an odd police report that stated Zimmerman told officers he was working security for a gun store after he was spotted parked outside the establishment at night.
In March of this year, Zimmerman’s lawyer released a video of him blaming President Barack Obama for the American public’s poor opinion of him.
