Reporter George Will's column will no longer appear in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch following a controversial column he penned about sexual assault.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch Drops Geoge Will's Column

Will’s column, which was published earlier this month, argued that being a victim of sexual assault had become a “coveted status” in light of the growing efforts to combat “the supposed campus epidemic of rape.” The incendiary article received a firestorm of backlash and eventually led to the Post-Dispatch opting to remove his column from the paper.

“The change has been under consideration for several months, but a column published June 5, in which Mr. Will suggested that sexual assault victims on college campuses enjoy a privileged status, made the decision easier,” the Post-Dispatch said in an editorial on Thursday. “The column was offensive and inaccurate; we apologize for publishing it.”

Prior to the Post-Dispatch dismissing Will, Washington Post Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt took to the writer’s defense. While Hiatt didn’t necessarily agree with Will’s comments on campus sexual assault, he did believe that Will’s opinions were not worthy of canceling his column and were “within the bounds of legitimate debate.”

Hiatt wrote in a statement, “George Will's column was well within the bounds of legitimate debate. I welcomed his contribution, as I welcome the discussion it sparked and the responses, some of which we will be publishing on our pages and website. This is what a good opinion site should do.”

Despite Hiatt and others' claims that Will should not be punished for his column, the swelling backlash from women across the country and women’s right activists was too loud for the Post-Dispatch to ignore it.

"The Washington Post needs to take a break from his column, they need to dump him," said National Organization for Women President Terry O'Neill, adding that columns such as Will's, are “actively harmful for the victims of sexual assault."
