George Takei tweeted that he will be running for a seat in Congress before posting another tweet hours later indicating that it was just a joke.
The Star Trek actor tweeted a story early Saturday, in which he was quoted saying that he is running for U.S. Congress in California against Devin Nunes.
“I think Nunes is vulnerable. And I plan to prove that. People are tired of his a**-kissing of Trump. Can I say that? I think I can. These days you can say pretty much anything and not get in trouble,” Takei said. He supposedly went on, “I want to be a champion for all people, but especially those whose voices are not heard often in the halls of Congress. We need to build a majority again in Congress, too, to be a check against the Trump Administration’s excesses, assuming he’s even around by then to keep making horrific mistakes.”
It didn’t take long for the story to spread across the Internet. Just as people were starting to root for Takei as congressman, it was revealed that this was nothing more than an April Fools joke. Takei tweeted a picture of himself with a sign saying “Gotcha!” a few hours later.
