George R. R. Martin teased fans of his A Song of Ice and Fire series with a chapter from the yet-to-be released sixth volume, The Winds of Winter.
Martin released the chapter from the much-anticipated novel on his website Wednesday. The Winds of Winter chapter is told from the point of view of Sansa Stark, who remains in the Eyrie living under the pseudonym Alayne Stone and posing as the daughter of Littlefinger. Hoping to raise the spirits of her weakling cousin Robin, she’s helping to throw a tournament of knights in the reclusive kingdom.
In the Game of Thrones series on HBO, Sansa is played by Sophie Turner, while Aiden Gillen plays Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish.
Martin is heavily involved in the TV series and often pens scripts. However, the author has taken a step back from script writing duties in order to focus his efforts on completing The Winds of Winter.
“Writing a season six script would cost me a month’s work on Winds, and maybe as much as six weeks, and I cannot afford that,” Martin wrote on his blog. “With [showrunners] David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and [producer/writer] Bryan Cogman on board, the scriptwriting chores for season six should be well covered. My energies are best devoted to ‘Winds.'”
Martin’s fifth Ice and Fire book, A Dance with Dragons, came out back in 2011.
The fifth season of Game of Thrones premieres on HBO Sunday, April 12 at 9 p.m. EST.
