George Michael is going to be honored by the upcoming release of a documentary he co-directed and narrated before his 2016 death: George Michael Freedom Uncut, and it will serve as the singer’s “final work” according to a statement Michael’s friend and the other director of the film David Austin.
This will technically be the third documentary released about Michael’s life. He was the subject of the 2005 documentary A Different Story, and then the 2017 doc George Michael Freedom, which this film is obviously following up from.
George Michael Freedom Uncut will explore Michael’s career primarily in the 1990s, including the making of his 1990 album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, the relationship with his lover Anselmo Feleppa who then died in 1993, and his legal battle with Sony Music in order to depart from the label.
Subjects of the documentary apparently include Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige and Liam Gallagher. There are also appearances by the cast of Michael’s “Freedom! ’90” music video that he notably refused to appear in, and predicted his departure from Sony in the lyrics. The David Fincher-directed video included supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford.
The film is available in select theaters now. You can see the trailer for the original documentary, George Michael: Freedom, here.
