George Michael rekindled a close friendship with his ex boyfriend Kenny Goss before his death.

The 53-year-old singer passed away on Sunday. His publicist said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”

Michael had a 13-year relationship with art dealer Goss, the man often described as the love of his life, before the pair split in 2011.

However, it has been revealed that the former couple had become close again in recent weeks.

A friend of the pair revealed: “George and Kenny are back spending time together again and it’s an exciting time for those of us who have been so worried over the last few years. There have been some really dark periods for George, especially during the time apart from Kenny.”

“When he was with him, there always seemed to be something keeping him on the straight and narrow. It was never straightforward but Kenny is the love of his life and is really good for him, so this is very good news.”

Goss had also encouraged Michael to return to his music career. Their friends believed that Michael could have written new music with Goss’ support, and executed a long-awaited comeback.

Michael and Goss got together in 1996 and broke up in 2009, something the singer – who has sold more than 100 million records – did not confirm for two years.

On the opening night of his Symphonica tour in 2011, he admitted: “In truth Kenny and I haven’t been together for two and a half years.”

“I love him very much. This man has brought me a lot of joy and pain.
